Salve Regina is located in posh Newport RI. Tourists come to the neighborhood to visit the mansions overlooking the bay. And Salve is located right next to one of the most famous, The Breakers. In fact, many of Salve Rigina’s campus buildings are substantial former homes that have been donated to the college.
Students at this Catholic college must take a theology course, but there are no other religious requirements.

Salve offers 43 majors. Many minors are offered as well as double majors. Other academic options include independent study, accelerated study, honors program, internships, distance learning. Teacher certification is available in early childhood, elementary, secondary, and special education and in six specific subject areas.

The most popular majors among recent graduates were nursing, administration of justice, and marketing. 32% of graduates pursue further study within one year. For those not doing further study, 76% are employed in their major field within one year.

30% to 40% of students study abroad every year.

Of 4800 applying in a recent year, 70% were accepted. Average GPA was 3.3, avg. SAT 1100. The nursing program will admit students directly as freshmen; for this program, the average GPA is 3.5 and SATs 1150. Merit scholarships range from $12,000 to $20,000 per year, to help with a total cost of attendance or $52,690. Their retention rate (freshmen returning as sophs) is 87%.

We had a talk and campus tour by a biology professor. He works with about 20 students at a time, mostly individually, on research.

Most students are from the Northeast.

Athletics are Div. III, except for sailing which is Div. 1, as befits a college located in one of the nations premier sailing locales.

Trolleys run from the campus into town and also to Amtrak.
